Hurricane Gustav

Been back from Maui for 2 weeks now and not a breath of wind in Cayman. All that is about to change as we have Hurricane Gustav on the way. It has currently been downgraded to a tropical storm, but is predicted to become a hurricane again shortly. Cayman is on hurricane watch at the moment. Hopefully we will get nothing too crazy but some wind and swell.

Backloops and other Maui madness

Thursday turned out to be the best day so far for me. Uppers was going off with some nice windswell for jumping on. I decided to start going for backloops, and realised they are not as hard as I thought they would be, especially when you have some nice steep waves faces to jump off. Matt Pritchard has a nice little back loop video tutorial on his site (http://www.pritchardwindsurfing.com/content/view/394/38/) which is worth checking out.
Yesterday was really gusty and not as good as Thursday. I had to change to a 3.7m, but was still overpowered at times and underpowered at others. Hoping the wind has dropped a little today and is more steady, as I’m keen to go for some forwards. One more day in Maui – it’s going to be sad to say goodbye to this windsurfing paradise.

Wind in Maui getting stronger!

Ok, so it turns out that yesterdays wind was nothing compared to what is to come. As GP writes on his blog (http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com), “The wind in Maui is about to get nuking”. Considering I was fully overpowered on a 4.1m yesterday, how much more nuking can it get?! Will probably go and check out Sprecks today to see what is happening there and maybe sail down to Camp One and attempt some loops. There is a great webcam to check that shows current video and archived footage of Camp One and Uppers at Kanaha. You can view it at http://www.mauiwindcam.com.
