First day on the water in Maui

Finally we got our first day on the water yesterday. After much speculation as to whether the wind actually would blow, we headed down to Kanaha around 12am and the found the wind to be blowing pretty hard. I had a Goya 85l board and rigged a 5.3m in the hope that it would be big enough, but once out there, it turned out to be too much and I was way overpowered! The wind continued to increase and we all came in and decided it was time to go to the shop and change down to some smaller sized kit. I ended up with a 75l board and 4.1m and 4.7m sail. Going out again the wind had increase further and I was overpowered with the 4.1m – crazy stuff!
Gonna try and work out today where exactly Lowers, Uppers and Camp One is, It’s a bit difficult at the moment as there is not a lot of swell, so it’s not breaking huge. Plus there are so many white caps out there. Hoping for a smoother ride, less bump and jump, and more swell, which is predicted throughout the rest of the week.

Arrival in Maui

So we finally made it after 4 flights, 2nd of which we sat on the runway for 2 hours courtesy of US Airways ($1 a water, $2 a coke, $7 a beer/wine/rum/whiskey/gin/etc). $600 and a cost-u-f-all-later+ 5 star accommodation courtesy of Old Boy we are up to date and ready for a utter thrashing. Just had a good steak dinner for Bruno’s birthday and a couple glasses of the finest wine that Costco could offer. There was mild wind this afternoon, but hoping for more tomorrow, increasing Sunday and Monday and throughout the week. sIgNiNg OuT dUe To LaCk Of CoNcIeOuSnEsS ……… more tomorrow ….

Maui trip is on!

Booked it, paid for it, now it’s just a couple months before the Cayman Windsurf crew hit the shores of Maui for the windsurf trip of a lifetime! We’ve just had our first tropical wave of the year hit us in the last few days, so it’s been mainly a SE wind blowing, but very gusty. Had a quick windsurf early this morning (6.2m and 102l board) and got a good hour on the water, after which the wind died, signifying it was time to go to work! In the summer these tropical waves and depressions are all we can rely on, so will have to do some other training to get fit for Maui. Matt Pritchard has some good tips for getting fit for the windsurf season here on the Pritchard Windsurfing website: (http://www.pritchardwindsurfing.com/content/view/330/38/).

First attempt on the Kona

The Kona’s arrived safe and sound here in Cayman a couple weeks back. We had 3 11’5s and a Mini-tanker. We took out the 11’5s for a SUP attempt on Seven Mile Beach. Unfortunately we didn’t have the proper paddles (they are on order), so we used some small wooden ones. The boards have a lot of glide and wanted to ride even the smallest ripple. I can’t wait to see how they will perform when the paddles arrive. I took the Kona out on Monday for a light wind sail on my 6.2m sail. It hops on the plane really quickly and I managed to catch some small waves. I managed to rip up some of the nice rubber decking though with my boom and got some sea anemone spikes in my foot after going a little too shallow, but all-in-all, a good first attempt. I have a feeling we’ll be getting loads more use out of these boards.

Longboard Windsurfing Revival

Here is an interesting post I found on the revival of longboard windsurfing.

It looks like a really good website in general for all longboard windsurfing information.
