Survival at the Sandbar

What a disaster of a day on Saturday. Went out to sail the Sandbar, got rinsed by a wave to discover my UJ had ripped my board and rig apart. Then proceeded to lose all the kit. Luckily Karel came out to help tow me in and we swam the last bit to land. Hoping some of my stuff may turn up. The kit lost was my 2006 JP Australia 93 liter freestyle/wave board, 4.75m Aerotech Charge, 2008 Hawaiian Proline boom (160-210), Powerex Z-Wave 400 mast and extension. If anyone finds it, please let me know.

Thanks to all who helped come out and look for me (Karel, Bruno, Chris, Walter (Red Sail Sports), Suzie, Jerome (C.I. Helicopters), RCIP and 911.

Sandbar Super Saturday!

What an amazing weekend! On Saturday morning the wind was blowing a good 22-25 knots from the NE and we opted to launch from Starfish Point and sail the Sandbar. It turned out to be the right idea, as late morning the swell really started to come in and there were head high waves coming in at the Sandbar. Perfect for jumping and backloops! The waves were so good there were even some surfers out there. This goes down as probably one of the best sessions ever!

Happy New Year!

My first New Years resolution is update this website more often and to get all the Maui pics up from our trip last year. But my main resolution is to crack the forward loop!

After a 3 week vacation away (2 weeks in Cape Town and 1 week in England) it is good to be back in the clear blue waters of Cayman. This weekend is looking excellent starting this afternoon. Tomorrow will be 25 knots NE all day according to the forecast – Sandbar here we come!!!

Tropical Storm Paloma

It looks like hurricane season is not quite over yet! Tropical storm Paloma has just formed here in the Caribbean and has got Grand Cayman in its sights. It is currently set to become a hurricane by the time it gets to us. Expecting some crazy wind and surf over the weekend. Will be on stand-by with boards and kit. Hopefully a Seven Mile Beach session is on the cards!

Windsurfing season is here!

Finally, after a long windless summer spell, the wind is here! The cold fronts passing through Cayman this week have kicked off the windsurfing season. This season looks to be better than ever with many more people becoming windsurfers. The season typically runs from November through April and the wind is generally from the North East.

There are many spots to sail on the island, but most windsurfing is done from East End at Morritt’s Tortuga Club and Resort. Here, Red Sail Sports offers rentals and lessons (http://www.tortugadivers.com/td_playwindsurf.html). They have certified instructors and a wide range of equipment. A bit closer to George Town, the Cayman Islands Sailing Club (http://www.sailing.ky/html/adult_lessons.html) also recently started giving lessons from its location in the North Sound.

The design of windsurfing boards and rigs has come a long way, making it easier than ever to learn. Now is the time to give windsurfing a try! Windsurfing is great for creating and toning muscle, in addition to providing a high cardio workout. If you are already an experienced windsurfer, get your kit out and come join the fun-loving windsurfing community. We sail mainly from East End, but also out to the Sand-bar from Starfish point and from North Sound Golf Club for evening sessions after work.
